Kai Street Wins National French Award

4/28/2010

Senior Kai Street hopes one day to be a medical doctor working in a foreign country, perhaps with a program like Doctors Without Borders. And a national Outstanding Senior in French Award from the American Association of Teachers of French (AATF) is now helping him achieve that dream.

Kai, who will enter Syracuse University this fall, was presented with the award at an Upper School awards assembly Wednesday morning. The honor, which is given only to some 220 students nationwide each year, recognizes demonstrated excellence in the study of French a well as commitment to the French language and cultures where it is spoken.

“I plan to major in medicine and minor in French so I can work abroad—and, if it’s possible, I’d like to work in areas of need,” Kai said. “I believe volunteer work is very important.”

During his time at Holy Innocents’, Kai has hosted a French student, participated in the National French Contest and National French Week activities, and studied in France. “His dedication to his studies and extracurricular activities are remarkable and laudable,” said teacher Gerard Gatoux. “The professors at Syracuse University are very lucky; they have a pearl in this young man.”

Georgia Spanish foreign language composition awards were also presented during Wednesday’s assembly. Creighton Aldridge, Kendall Jackson, Tay Rivers and Carolina Saca received Superior Awards. Morever Saca and Rivers and were given $25 gift certificates to Barnes & Noble.
